PFAS Presentation Request
Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a class of chemicals used in firefighting foams and many everyday products due to their fire-resistant properties. However, PFAS are persistent in the environment and the human body, and exposure has been linked to various health concerns. Unfortunately, firefighters face a heightened risk of PFAS occupational exposure due to their regular contact with these chemicals during training and emergency response. This informative presentation will highlight emerging technologies and policies aimed at reducing PFAS use in firefighting and provide resources for attendees to learn more about protecting themselves and their communities from PFAS pollutants.
Considered a Subject Matter Expert on PFAS occupational exposure in the fire service, Kevin Ferrara delivers an overview of PFAS, focusing on the sources and pathways of occupational exposure. Interactive discussion during the presentation includes the potential health effects associated with PFAS exposure and an examination of ongoing research regarding the impact these “forever chemicals” pose on firefighters and emergency responders. Furthermore, discussions include the exploration of evidence-based strategies for minimizing PFAS exposure, including best practices for personal protective equipment (PPE) use, decontamination procedures, and safe handling of products containing PFAS.
