PFAS Presentation Request

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) chemicals in firefighting foams and many everyday products are fire-resistant. PFAS are persistent in the environment and the human body, and exposure is linked to various health concerns. Firefighters face high PFAS exposure from regular contact during training and emergency response. This presentation addresses emerging technologies and policies to reduce PFAS in firefighting, plus resources for protecting communities from PFAS pollutants.

Kevin Ferrara, AFSO21 LLC’s CEO and PFAS occupational exposure expert in the fire service, discusses PFAS sources and exposure pathways. The presentation discusses potential health effects of PFAS exposure and ongoing research on its impact on firefighters and emergency responders. Discussions also include evidence-based strategies to minimize PFAS exposure including PPE best practices, decontamination, safe handling of PFAS products, and designing self-capturing PPE cleaning systems to prevent toxic wastewater from entering sanitary sewers.

Kevin has been featured on media outlets such as Spotlight on America and was personally interviewed by Erin Brockovich.
